Deviating momentarily from the travel blogs that I have just started, I’d like to delve for the moment, a life time profession. A passion if you may, about salesmanship.

My journey into sales began when I was just 20 years old. My first job involved selling books, but as time went on and my interests evolved, I transitioned to more profitable products. Now, at 76 years old and officially retired, I’m still deeply involved in the art of selling. If that’s not passion for salesmanship in its purest form, I don’t know what is. And if you were to ask me how I’m doing? Without batting an eyelash, I’d confidently say — I’m really good at it. Let me share why.

While pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and after completing a two-year apprenticeship aboard an international ship, I found myself juggling an unexpected role: a commission-based encyclopedia salesman. By day, I went to school, and by night I knocked on doors selling encyclopedias — what people today might call a side hustle. I won’t sugarcoat it: it was incredibly tough. Door-to-door sales back then were raw and unrefined, and surviving in that kind of environment required grit. Honestly, just sticking with it deserved serious applause. Somehow, I managed. The guidance of seasoned supervisors and managers, veterans in the field, helped me refine my skills and reach some level of success. Most importantly, it allowed me to pay my tuition fees.

Eventually, I discovered sales positions that offered the stability of a regular salary combined with commissions. These were full-time roles, not side hustles, but with my experience and qualifications, I was a natural fit. Deciding to quit school and securing one of these roles marked the start of what would become my long and successful career in sales. Its a travail of one encyclopedia salesman unto becoming the president of a thriving I.T. company.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

But that is a topic for another time. Over the course of more than 50 years in this profession, I have acquired not only expertise but also valuable insights, life lessons, and guiding principles surrounding this field. These have been instrumental not only in understanding and practicing this rewarding profession but also in achieving success and excellence within it.

Let us explore these further.

And let me tell you___

How to Sell Yourself to Others

We are all salesmen or saleswomen! Or salespersons, so to speak.

Whether we are entrepreneurs, professionals, or politicians; whether we are staff workers, engineers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, athletes, aspiring models, or fashion designers; whether we are young professionals brimming with talent or opinionated influencers, we all must engage in the art of persuasion.

Whether it is a renowned brand or a ground breaking product; a revolutionary technology, or a sophisticated software application, each must be introduced to the market and effectively marketed. And no individual is better suited for this task than the developer-salesperson—the salesperson within you!

A newly minted computer science graduate seeking a position within a burgeoning company, he or she must articulate to the hiring manager why his or her Curriculum Vitae bears significance to the organization and how he or she can serve as a valuable asset as a new hire. This applicant must expound on his or her qualifications during the job interview; elaborating beyond what is conveyed in the printed bio. After all, hiring managers have limited time to sift through thousands of CVs on their desk. However, they do have the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the job applicant during a face-to-face interview. It is self-evident that every job seeker must honestly create a well crafted, professional CV while at the same time be thoroughly prepared for the interview and subtly yet enthusiastically elaborate his case to the interviewer. After all, this is the golden opportunity to market the most vital commodity of all—YOURSELF!

A newly invented product or software application not only requires extensive testing and parallel runs but, more importantly, it must also communicate its practicality and efficiency, as well as its potential for cost reduction to prospective customers and the general public. Conversely, well-established products necessitate consistent promotion through various marketing strategies to ensure sustainability and long-term acceptance, if not an indelible market presence. Always mindful of the adage: Nothing lasts forever.

In the broader context, a lawyer not only secures clients by winning cases but also engages in club memberships, participates in social gatherings or events, and takes part in public discourse. A teacher not only prepares for the next day’s lesson but also recounts the exploits of historical figures and discuss hot current topics, even fascinating movies. They not only pose questions to the class but also actively listen to students’ ideas and their perceptions of the subject matter. This approach transforms the teacher's role from a mere monologist to a facilitator of participatory discussion, thereby enlivening the subject while simultaneously earning respect and admiration from students, parents, and school administrators alike. A budding actor requires an agent, while a politician needs a spokesperson. Harry Potter did not merely sell tickets at the booth. The endeavor also involved showcasing trailers, participating in film festivals, and engaging in media promotions. Taylor Swift did not not easily sell millions of albums,  it involved knocking on multiple recording doors up and down Nashville’s Music Row even at an early age. She went by telling receptionists: “Hi, I’m Taylor. I’m 11. I want a record deal. Call me.” She never received a call. (Credit: Nicki Swift)

But  it did not deter Taylor Swift from pursuing her dream career. In spite of numerous rejections, she persisted. Despite so many daunting attempts she never retreated from her objective. It never obscured her indomitable spirit - even when she struggled to convince her parents to leave their home place in West Reading, Pennsylvania just to be in the music industry’s enclave in Nashville, Tennessee.

Renowned singers do not solely rely on radio airplay; they must also be seen on stage, on television, and in media forums. Ultimately, each individual requires a salesperson, and each one must sell themselves to others—indeed, to everyone!

A journey through the eyes of travel enthusiasts

Now is the best time to visit Banff in Alberta, CA

There’s just close to 2 months to enjoy spring this year which ends on June 21. That said, it goes without saying Plan now!

While it's been said that Alberta in Canada is notably cold, nonetheless now indeed is the best time to visit Alberta. It's the season when snow capped mountains begin to thaw; when wildlife emerges from hibernation; when native flowers evoke their initial beauty.

 Banff and Canmore

Banff and Canmore provide visitors with a thrilling experience. Approaching from Calgary or Edmonton by car or shuttle, one is immediately greeted by the impressive view of the snow-capped mountains that will certainly set your adrenaline pumping. Although Banff is more popular nonetheless, Canmore should not be left out. Afterall, it is a mere 20 mins. drive to Banff; it also has lower hotel rates and more parking space. Canmore is home to the Geoscience Center, The Canmore Museum and finally the Rat's Nest Cave - an extraordinary experience that involves crawling, squeezing, rapelling and even swimming thru chambers and narrow passageways; on cold (year round ave. temp of 5 deg.Celsius) amid dark environment. Guests are provided with headlamps and climbing gears. It is an exprience for agile and more adventurous individuals. Coverage takes 2-4 hrs. depending on one's preference. Entrance fees are provided at the center with no advanced bookings. Canmore Cave Tours have exclusive rights to the management of Rat's Cave Nest They offer virtual experience tour to give would-be visitors a glimpse of the tour.

On the other hand, Banff’s streets are lined with souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants and not to mention, a popular ice cream shop! (haha what a treat) One could write a thousand words but Banff is best described in pictures. (Below)

In some of the boutiques you can also shop for Ammolite jewelry – an organic gemstone found exclusively in the Rocky Mountain’s east side. It is a rare gemstone created by fossilzed shells of ancient Ammonites. Thus Ammolite jewelery is not only a stunning play of colors, it is also a reflection of 70 million years of natural transformation and history. In March 17, 2022 the Alberta government designated Ammolite as the province's official gemstone. It symbolizes Alberta's rich cultural heritage that has a lasting impact on the world of exquisite gemstones.  "Ammolite is an important part of our heritage and economy. Recognizing Ammolite as Alberta's offiicial gemstone reflects the unique nature of the stone and of our province." Ron Orr, former Minister of Culture, Government of Alberta
